Drop Down Menu Solutions

I have used many drop down menu solutions, some are great, some are not so great. What makes a great menu is that it is not only accessibility standards compliant, but also semantically correct. This ensures that the site navigation is always accessible, even to users browsing with screen readers or text only browsers that ignore CSS.

My Favorite Menus

  • The CSS/JavaScript Slider is a powerful menu solution that I pieced together from several sources. They feature customizable slide functions that can come in from any side, at any speed. It is robust enough to use in almost any situation, and has the fancy sliding effect that gives it that extra special something. All the sub-menu positing is set through the JavaScript. If you have a centered design you can set the left to "0%" and position them with left margin through the CSS.
  • The Son of Suckerfish menu has really become my go-to menu for production. It is a fast, relatively easy, menu to implement and customize.

It is very important that whatever menu you choose works in every browser, on every operating system, the same way.

Here's a Tip! It is best to display sub-menu items off the page instead of having them on display none. This will allow users with disabilities who are using screen reading software to browse the site to interact with the links.

Older Menus I Experimented With

I don't really recommenced using these particular solutions, as they may not be cross browser compatible.
