Step Five: Write Good Content
Writing meaningful content is probably one of the most neglected practices there are when it comes to posting your portfolio website. I do understand that most portfolios are centered around examples of different kinds of work, and with the exception of writers portfolios I find that designers rely too heavily on their work to speak for it's self. Why make your potential employer guess about the details of the work you have on display? As a rule of thumb every page on your Website must have at least a paragraph of meaningful content, It will be easy to tell if its mumbo jumbo. And on top of that each portfolio piece should have a description of the medium, software used, techniques and methods. The more you explain to your potential employers the better, this is your chance to sell not only your work but you self. No one likes a boring quiet guy around the office, and if your portfolio website has no content that is the impression you are giving: that you only do what you do, and are not outspoken or opinionated about your work and the decisions you made leading up to the final piece.

Personalized Portfolio

I set out to provide the information and resources that are needed in order to create a portfolio website. The aim with the portfolio website is to show off your portfolio work and explain a bit about your process or technique that you used.

The point of the portfolio website is to showcase what you feel you do best. The goal should be to find a middle ground between your own artistic sensibility and your own technical limitations.

Your own personal scene of style, and personality, needs to be a part of your portfolio website and I encourage designers to go nuts as long as the final design is instinctively usable. So that if Mr. BigWig sits down to browse through your gallery of artwork he will not get confused in any way by the interface and layout of your website.

Now this is important, because allot of designers miss a large chunk of their audience through just plain old fashion confusion! So to wrap this up : make sure your portfolio website is a delicate balance of creativity and usability, efficient and functional yet creative and interesting.

Just because something works well for the next guy dose not guarantee that if you copy his strategy exactly you will receive his results.

Try to avoid trends or doing something because its a convention. Like having le nave down the left side, maybe that just wont work for your needs, then that's fine for you to do what you need to to make your site work. However that is a very slippery slope, because you definitely do not want to be the designer who defy's convention at every turn in an effort to be "different" (Difficult is more like it!) . Just remember that the internet thrives on conformity, with standards and conventions up and out the wazoo.

Maintaining a professional portfolio website provides you with a distinct advantage over other applicants.

Step Five: Sharing Information

I always believe in sharing information. if I think its useful enough to write about and I have some experience that I might be able to pass along some good tips and tricks. When you dedicate your self to something, there is a tenancy to get so wrapped up in the technical nittie gritty that I end up in my own little bubble. Sometimes it is hard for potential employers to see through your bubble to your true genius. I like to help my visitors by explaining the simple stuff and leaving the topic open for discussion or comments or whatever after that. This way when your potential boss visits your new portfolio website he can read for himself just the difficulties that went into your projects as well as get a feel for how creative you are by reading about the solution you used or technique you demonstrated.
For instance I recently created this web development tutorial detailing the process of fabricating cutting edge CSS drop down menus with a shot of JavaScript to make sure they are as browser friendly and Search Engine Accessible as is humanly possible. Please learn from these bad boys.. I feel like its the only way for all the time I spent on these demonstration and CSS design challenge journals:
